About Carbon Fiber
Known and appreciated for its strength, carbon fiber is created by bringing raw organic matter to a very high temperature. It is then added to synthetic resins until they are scorched or carbonized, producing a thin, strong, durable material. These qualities make it popular in producing structures where light materials are preferable and capable of enduring a great deal of tension. Carbon fiber is therefore common in the production of automobiles, aircrafts and buildings.
About Movements with Jewels
Within a movement, metal on metal contact creates wear and tear. Watchmakers use jewel bearings to reduce friction and extend the movement's life. Diamonds, sapphires, rubies and garnets are the preferred materials with sapphire being the most commonly used because of its fine texture. The jewel arrangement can vary by manufacturer but as a general rule, a higher number of jewels suggests a more prestigious movement. The Swiss Automatic features a staggering 57 jewel count.

Buying a New Autoclave/ Sterilizer "Tuttnauer"
Guide viewed: 632 times Tags: Tuttnauer | Autoclave | Dental | Sterilizer | Midmark
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hello
I was just looking at the 600+ listings under the keyword "Autoclave" in the eBay search and was amazed at the eclectic assortment I found.
I found autoclaves that are not legal for use in the USA, electronic units made in China that have little or no service in the USA (and no FDA approval), Autoclaves that have been modified from their original design, Autoclaves I know for a fact that have limited "if any" spare parts available, Autoclaves such as the Midmark M-9 & M-11 which from 2003 and older the Manufactere has no replacement main PC boards available (That's Right ! Midmark has a Cash for Clunkers Program that affects all these units that are Seven (7) years old or older. Basically, if you have one of these autoclaves and have a board problem you will need to send it to Midmark where they will determine whether or not it is a board issue. If so, they keep the autoclave and issue a $1000.00 Rebate Check towards the purchase of a New machine. Midmark then destroys the unit and recycles it's remains to keep it out of the market place. What's not clear is if this program only applies to the original owner or will it provide some protection to those purchasing used machines on eBay?), I also see a lot of older Pelton and Crane OCR and OCM autoclaves( most of these units never had a boiler certification or FDA approval. The OCR and OCM were produced between 1966 and 1989. These units have a lot of safety issues because of their age and the modifications that have been done to some of them over the years. One of my biggest concerns is that the safety valves on most of the older units do not work and the machine has to be modified to accept a modern part.) Autoclaves I have never seen or heard of before (I've been in this business 18 years), Autoclaves that are said to be new and never used when in fact I can tell by the sellers pictures that it is not true, Autoclaves that are said to be in good working order when I can tell that it has a bad heater just from a picture, Autoclaves from Government surplus auctions (everyone knows you don't buy Sony Speakers and you never buy an autoclave from a Government Surplus Auction- usually ther's no life left in them) and finally, 15- 20 year old autoclaves that are selling for not much less money that I can sell you a New Tuttnauer autoclave for. My units are FDA approved, Have boiler certificates and have international approvals. Plus, you get a manufacture's warranty ranging from One - Two Years.
What is the reasoning for purchasing an autoclave from someone who is completley ignorant of the item he/she is selling and cannot tell you the absolute condition the machine is in? I just don't get. Paying a bit more upfront is always better than buying an unknown. Especially, when that first service call puts you over the cost of buying new.
Autoclaves are the most important items in your office. Used properly, they keep your patients safe from infection. Without a properly working autoclave you may as well close your doors because you are not practicing safe medicine.
Just some random thoughts that circulate through my mind from time to time.

Autoclaves I have never seen or heard of before (I've been in this business 18 years), Autoclaves that are said to be new and never used when in fact I can tell by the sellers pictures that it is not true, Autoclaves that are said to be in good working order when I can tell that it has a bad heater just from a picture, Autoclaves from Government surplus auctions (everyone knows you don't buy Sony Speakers and you never buy an autoclave from a Government Surplus Auction- usually ther's no life left in them) and finally, 15- 20 year old autoclaves that are selling for not much less money that I can sell you a New Tuttnauer autoclave for.

*****This is a guide we wrote on eBay regarding New/Used autoclaves on eBay and eBay's lack of respect for their own policy.*****
Looking to buy a new Tuttnauer autoclave, parts or accessories on eBay? You can easily find 270 items listed at any time. So, eBay is a great place to start.
Buying online does pose some interesting questions though. Like, who is this seller I'm about to fork $3200 over too? Most sellers claim to be some sort of Dealer or some sort of "Top Refurbisher". Well thats all and good but why is it that most sellers of autoclaves whether New or Used opt not to place in their ad copy any means of identifying who they really are?
Upon closer inspection, several listings I looked at this morning looked legit and had lower prices than similar autoclaves listed. A closer look reveals some "Big" questions. Most manufacturers including Tuttnauer USA have started M.A.P. pricing policies (minimum advertised Price). As an example, if you see a Tuttnauer EZ9 autoclave listed as new for anything less than $4156.25 then that seller is not compliant with M.A.P. pricing. Do you want to hand $4156.00 over to a guy that could potentially have his/her dealership pulled in the middle of your transaction? I would not want that aggrevation myself. The other issue with this is warranty, manufacturer's are pulling together and changing their policies where soon warranties will not be honored if they cannot see that the product was purchased through the correct channels.
I also have a huge issue with eBay for not enforcing their own rules in a quick and efficient manner. eBay requires sellers in certain categories to list their Business Name, Nature of Business, Contact Name and Phone Number in the listings as well as post the required FDA statement (which actually does not concern the purchase of an autoclave). This is just not happening. Guys are out their claiming to be dealers and the only way you have of contacting them is through the eBay system. How comfortable does that make you feel? I'd rather be able to verify any statements by googling the company name or even being able to call a manufacturer and say "hey, is "ABC" a dealer in good standing"?
I had a doctor just yesterday say "I saw this autoclave on eBay for 4k and I'm thinking of purchasing it" my first response was, first off Doc. that manufacture does not allow it's dealers to advertise for anything less than full list price. So, right off the bat I see a big red flag. So, the Doc then showed me a printout of the auction. It is from a new seller with negative feedback. This seller also has absolutely nothing in his ad copy which would identify his identity outside of ebay.
What made me stand out to the Doc. was that I had actually spoken to this seller a few months ago and remembered his name and had his phone number to share with the Doc. I was also able to tell the Doc that this guys was not a dealer and that he was reselling the units. ( he had contacted me about supplying him machines- I said No)
This economy is playing huge games with consumers. Everyone wants a refurbished autoclave or a used autoclave to save money. Dealers have their hands tied with M.A.P. pricing so they get their buddies to through the claves out on their eBay accounts. Well that game is comming to a close soon as the manufacturers are buckling down and tracing serial numbers and holding dealers accountable.
Purchase your next autoclave from a dealer whom you can verify !!!!!!!!!!!!
